At this point, there is nothing you can say or do to Marcus Smart that will make him stop taking so many threes. That’s just who he is. You want all the other stuff he brings to the table, then you deal with the big pile of bricks. It does no good to complain about it, or even to acknowledge it.
Plus, sometimes they DO go in, and then you end up with a player who was a net positive on both sides of the ball instead of just one. Like tonight. As the national commentators looked on with unbelieving eyes, Smart knocked down five triples on his way to 18 points to go with a whole bunch of other counting stats. 4 boards, 7 dimes, 7 steals, 2 blocks, for some reason this feels really impressive even though it’s not that close to a 5×5.
