I seem to remember Dwight Powell being more of a jumpshooter than he appeared in this game. Yes, he did hit a corner three, but everybody does that these days. The taking and making of corner threes is no longer an indicator of whether or not somebody is a shooter. Case in point: Jarrett Allen. Second case in point: DeAndre Liggins.
To confirm my suspicions, I went back and revisited my first-ever Dwight Powell highlight video. At that point I called him a “Brook Lopez-lookin’ dude”, and while I didn’t assign him the moniker of “Ca$h Midrange”, I definitely thought about it, because he was money from that 16 to 20 foot range. Now I’m looking at his nowadays shot chart and he’s only taken twelve midrange jimbos in the whole season. He’s 13-of-52 (25%) on any kind of jumpshot this year after being 59-of-199 (29%) on them last season.
If Dwight Power doesn’t want to deliver on my need to watch big men shoot jumpers, I’ll find another one who does. There’s plenty out there and not all of them look vaguely like Brook Lopez.
