Toronto fans may have been annoyed at Jose Calderon by the end of his tenure with him because of his tendency to pound the ball, but man, that guy had some sick assist-to-turnover ratios early in his career. I’ve been watching the NBA forever and no one ever thought to tell me about this? He frickin’ averaged 9 assists with only 2 turnovers like three separate seasons. That’s sick. Nowadays if you want a non-star PG to average 9 assists (which basically isn’t going to happen in the first place), you’re getting 4 turnovers to go with it.
That Calderon is gone now. Long gone. His assists took a hit as soon as he moved to the United States, and it just got lower and lower. Now, he barely does anything on the court: 7 and 3.5 per 36, it’s kind of funny that the Cavaliers have to start someone so unproductive. It seems to be working, though, so maybe they’ve hit on something: taking the ball out of the hands of LeBron is stupid. Sorry Derrick.
