The one and only time I got hyped for Jarell Martin was when he first appeared on my channel in March of 2016. At that time he represented the unknown: he had played sparingly in the first half of that season, inactive for large stretches and getting DNP’s even when he was on the active roster. Then, out of nowhere, he scored sixteen points. I was excited to see what this mysterious enigma known as “Jarell” could do on the court.
Well, it turns out that Martin is not an overly exciting player, and my hype was extinguished as soon as the video was uploaded. I was happy to have chronicled his on-court exploits, but wouldn’t have been too disappointed if that had been his one and only appearance on my channel. At that time, my personal hype for Jarell Eddie far exceeded my personal hype for Jarell Martin.
The jokes’ on me because Martin is still in the league and I still have to make videos for him, while Jarell Eddie is nowhere to be seen. Martin, to me, is like JaMychal Green 0.5; since Green gets very little hype to start with (from Grizzlies fans or any other source), it would follow that Martin gets exactly half that amount of hype, which is to say, an infinitesimally small amount of hype. But he scored seventeen points, which is a lot for him, so here we are. I have to say, my hype level was raised a perceptible amount when he went coast-to-coast for a big two-hander dunk.
