Is Trae Young the second coming of Pistol Pete Maravich on the Hawks? I’m about to do some digging to find out, keeping in mind that I don’t watch a lot of old NBA film and most of my knowledge about these old heads is sourced from mainstream media and Wikipedia.
Both Young and Maravich like to shoot shots from anywhere on the court. That’s the number one biggest similarity in my mind. They just love scoring. If memory serves me correctly (and it had better serve me correctly because there’s no way I’m going to waste my own precious time by fact-checking these things), both players led the NCAA in scoring for at least one year. Scoring is in their blood. Maravich was more efficient at it, but I’m chalking that up to a difference in eras.
Both Young and Maravich are guards. This is pretty straightforward. If you need more explanation that that, you are officially a dumb-dumb.
Maravich was a willing passer and a good one too, but he was more into scoring than anything else. Young seems to split his attention evenly between scoring and passing. So I would say that both were good passers, but Young is more clearly a point guard than Maravich was.
Young and Maravich both had hair in their rookie seasons. However, I don’t think Young is going to have hair much longer the rate things are going, so this comparison will hold less and less water as Young’s career progresses.
As far as I can tell, neither Young or Maravich care(d) about defense. This is perfect because DTB doesn’t care about defense either.
As you can see from my exhaustive research outlined above, Trae Young is indeed the second coming of Pistol Pete Maravich on the Hawks. Everybody hold on to your butts.
