I’m going to let you in on a little secret.
You might think that your precious, beloved DTB is above selling out to multi-national corporations for monetary gain. You might think that journalistic ethics stand between his furtherment of the scrub cause and the relentless pursuit of straight up raw cash. I’m telling you right now that I am not above those things. I love money, and I am willing to compromise my vision in order to get more of it.
That’s why I have introduced product placement on my video thumbnails. You see that UPS logo next to Evan Fournier’s head? I didn’t have to shoop that in there, it was just in there as part of some in-arena advertisement. But I totally would have shooped it in there if UPS wanted me to. That’s how low I have fallen. I am grovelling at the feet of these companies, offering to taint the one thing that should never be tainted – NBA highlight videos – in order to make a quick buck.
This sort of stuff happens on Instagram and Twitter all the time. All those influential accounts with millions of followers? Companies are paying them big bucks to shill those products. And on those platforms, such shilling is not only understandable, but accepted. Everybody knows that those big makeup brands are paying these women to hawk their wares. But nobody expected it from the one channel on YouTube who has, up to this point, shown nothing but intengrity and class every step of the way.
The days of integrity and ethical behavior are behind me now. Before me lies a glorious road of capitalistic fervor. The road is lined with money-trees and paved with bricks of gold. I cannot wait to walk down it.
