I often come away from Brandon Ingram videos feeling like he’s some kind of midrange specialist who can punish players with his smooth in-between game. That just shows that even somebody like me, somebody who perfectly understands the power that a well-crafted highlight video can wield, will occasionally fall victim to the deceptions of the format.
The truth is, Ingram isn’t an outstanding or even great midrange player. He’s more midrange-oriented than the majority of the league, but he barely cracks the top fifty in midrange makes this season, and his percentage (37.5%) on those shots is not good. Since he only averages roughly one midrange make per game, every tough jimbo he hits here against the Rockets (excluding the first one) is what I call a “bonus jimbo”. Bonus jimbos are shots you can’t count on every night. They’re shots that you’re happy to have, but the happiness is tempered by the understanding that your team can’t rely on them. For example, Steph Curry three-pointers aren’t “bonus jimbos”. Giannis three-pointers are.
If a prominent blogger or journalist could start dropping “bonus jimbo” into their articles, that would be great. I demand proper attribution, of course.
