Trae Young 33 Points/12 Assists Full Highlights (4/3/2019)

There are certain games, like this one against the 76ers, where it seems like the John Collins/Trae Young pick-and-roll is unstoppable. Under ideal circumstances, with two talented players, the pick-and-roll is literally unstoppable anyway; there are just too many ways for the ballhandler to counter anything shown by the defense. But the NBA usually isn’t played in ideal circumstances, and the play often fails. Usually it’s because the PG is too dumb to make the right decision. That is not a problem with Young running the show.

This is one of those games where you have to wonder why they bothered running any other play at all. But in addition to the pick-and-roll working well, it also looked like Young could just run in there and take a floater/layup any time he wanted. So then your wonderment changes from wondering about pick-and-rolls to wondering about why Young didn’t score 50 (or even more).

The truth of the matter is, it’s almost the end of the season. The Hawks, as indicated by their relatively low win total, are not going to make the playoffs. If Young is going to score 50 in a game, which he is very capable of doing, the best chances are right now. Because in a week from now, there won’t be any more games for him to score 50 in until October. And it’s especially important to try against a team like the 76ers, who had no interest in stopping him or even trying to win the game because Jimmy Butler is too busy ruining the team with his assiness. 33 points is good, but 12 assists? If they aren’t all to Collins for lob dunks (only like half of them were) then those aren’t good passes. Not when you have an unstoppable floater which you can shoot LITERALLY every possession.

Remember, there’s no rule that says you can’t shoot floaters from the three-point line.
