I was getting all sad and sentimental because I thought this might be D.J. Wilson’s last season with the Bucks, but I just peeped his contract details (the “Deej Deets”) and it looks like the Bucks picked up his extension, so he’s got one more year of failing to live up to potential for the two parties go their separate ways. So I will postpone my sadness and sentimentality until that time. Unfortunately some tears already leaked out of my eyeballs so I will have to pretend that they’re there because I was watching that part of the Lord of the Rings where everybody kneels to the hobbits.
The fact that D.J. Wilson is a 17th-overall pick in his third season, and is still getting highlight videos when he scores a lowly total of a dozen points, is a bad sign for his career. Given the fact that he doesn’t display any sort of “conventional” scoring game at all, it’s hard to see a path forward for him in the NBA. You could maybe mold him into a pure stretch four, but it would be like a Quincy Acy situation where you’re taking a poor three-point shooter and trying to stick them into a role where they don’t really fit.
That’s too bad because I do like Deej and wish he was better. It’s hard for me to disentangle my motivations to determine whether I actually “like him” like him or if I only ironically like him because of his awkward game and the fact that he looks like a WNBA player with an Adam’s apple, but I don’t think that’s relevant here.
Is it too late to trade him to the Raptors for Stanley Johnson? It worked for Thon, right? Kinda?
