Patrick Williams was the fourth overall pick in last year’s draft, and he’s basically performing up to expectations as far as I can tell, yet there is little hype surrounding him. Sure, he’s not really in the ROTY of the Year conversation, but he’s definitely in the “Third best rookie of the year” conversation, which is approximately 80% as prestigious yet receives 0% of the media attention. You know it’s prestigious because I send out the 3BROTY trophy to its winner every single season. Trophy = prestige. That’s the rule of life.
I wonder how Tyler Herro is enjoying his 2020 3BROTY trophy. It’s not quite a championship ring, but it’s the second best thing to a championship ring.
Since I am semi-retired from the highlights biz, I don’t have the energy or the time to start a grassroots hype machine for Patrick Williams. I would love to be the person who rallies NBA fans around the concept of “smart off-ball cuts”, “acceptable jumpshot mechanics”, and “cool hair discoloration thing” (concepts which Patrick Williams fully embodies), but I can’t be that person. Somebody else will have to pick up the mantle and they’ll have to be ready to spam Twitter with hashtags 24/7. #PatrickWilliamsIsAPrettyGoodRookie would be my preferred hashtag, but I’m not the one in charge of this project, so I don’t get to decide.
