Cory Joseph 24 Points/7 Assists Full Highlights (4/8/2021)

For the past few weeks, I’ve been really confused about the current point guard situation in Detroit. I started making myself a handy cheat-sheet so I wouldn’t lose track of anybody, but then I thought, why not share my insight with the world so that people other than myself can benefit from it? Without further ado, I present:

DTB’S OFFICIAL ASSESSMENT OF THE POINT GUARD SITUATION IN DETROIT RIGHT NOW

Cory Joseph: The hero of our story. He just got swapped off the Kings for Delon Wright. I don’t understand what this deal accomplished, other than maybe Joseph is more of a “vet’s vet” than Wright is. Right now he’s playing like he could be the starter, but he’s not the starter. Yet.

Dennis Smith Jr.: This reclamation project is experiencing a minor career revival in Detroit, but I don’t see how he fits in with their long-term plans. In my view, nothing that the Pistons have done in the past year has made sense from a long-term planning perspective. I also don’t think that DSJ will ever be a permanent solution at the point guard position for any team.

Saben Lee: From what I understand, this guy was supposed to be less NBA-ready than he actually turned out to be, so he was able to get real minutes and throw the point guard rotation out whack. Good for him. Bad news for the million other point guards on the roster who want to get minutes.

Killian Hayes: Supposedly the Pistons’ PG of the future, drafted seventh overall, just came back from injury and has looked okay. Having competition from Saben Lee will either accelerate the development of both of them, or it will ruin Hayes’ career. There is no middle ground. There is never any middle ground in my world.

Tyler Cook: I thought this was Quinn Cook, who is a point guard, but no, it’s Tyler Cook, who is not a point guard. Ignore this section of the OFFICIAL ASSESSMENT.

Frank Jackson: Basketball-reference lists him as a point guard but I don’t believe that for a second. He is a shooting guard, or, at best, a combo guard. A point guard would not average 1.7 assists per 36 minutes as Jackson is currently doing.

I just got to the end of this assessment and I realized that I still don’t know who the starter is supposed to be. I need to do more research but I don’t feel like doing that research, so I need Pistons fans to leave comments that will supplement my knowledge of the situation. Who is the starter? Who is in Detroit long-term? Who is a buy-out target? Who is lurking in the G-League waiting to strike like a deadly cobra? Who is Tom Gores’ cocaine dealer?
