Luguentz Dort 26 Points Full Highlights (12/28/2020)

I’m looking at the Thunder roster right now, and I’m just coming to the startling (perhaps even disquieting) conclusion that Luguentz Dort is their third option on offense. When you frame things in that context, 26 points from isn’t even really a surprise. Third options on teams score 26 points all the time. A third option is expected to be able to score 26 or more on a semi-regular basis. Dort is the third option, ergo, Dort will be way more of a scorer than he was last season.

The math checks out. The only players who unarguably deserve more touches/scoring opportunities than Dort are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Al Horford. You could make an argument for George Hill as the third option, but it wouldn’t be a very convincing argument. That would be the type of argument that causes me to yawn exaggeratedly and look in other directions in order to get you to stop talking.

Last season, Dort was, like, the eighth option on offense, so this is a big promotion for him. He’s no longer stuck behind SGA, Dennis Schroder, Danilo Gallinari, Chris Paul, Steven Adams, Nerlens Noel, and Hamidou Diallo in the pecking order. The pecking order all got traded away, leaving Dort to do his thing, which is to allegedly play really good defense (something that DownToBuck doesn’t care about, even in retirement), and also provide some scoring with that linebacker-esque body of his. When he muscles weaker players out of the way and slams on them, can we say that he put them in “Dort Court”?
