Tarik Black is a special type of player known as a “fan favorite”. Usually a player designated as such is lacking in skin pigmentation and not very good; Tarik, as evidenced by his last name, actually has plentiful melanin in his skin, but excels enough at the not very good part to make up for it.
As the assigned “fan favorite”, Black doesn’t get to play a whole lot, and when he happens to do something positive in the few minutes he is allotted, everyone freaks out and gets super hyped. There is no hope at all that he turns into anything that he isn’t already, no fevered imaginings of him becoming a dominant or even passable center. Fans just want to see the underdog dunk and be energetic, nothing more.
I don’t remember when or why everyone turned on Robert Sacre, but it looks like Tarik has taken his role. He’d better enjoy the limelight while it lasts; Lakers fans are fickle and will turn on him in a heartbeat.
