Derrick Jones can slam the basketball good. And that’s it. Of course, the ability to slam good is one of the more desirable traits that a basketball player can have, and if you can slam it good enough, you don’t need to do anything else to secure a spot in the league, at least for a little bit. See: Harold Miner.
I haven’t watched this year’s dunk contest or even seen any of the dunks from it, so I can’t say anything about that. What I CAN say, though, is that Jones is perfectly capable of throwing down awesome dunks in-game. In-game dunks, by definition, are always gonna be way cooler than anything that happens in an exhibition dunk-off. There are people, theoretically, trying to stop Jones from dunking it in this video. And he dunks it despite them. He didn’t poster anybody, but even the threat of getting fouled and thrown to the ground makes it all so much more intense. And you only get one chance. You mess up? Run back on D with your head down and your tail between your legs. Christ, I hate dunk contests so much. Even last year’s supposedly awesome one did nothing for me.
Hopefully “Airplane Mode” Jones keeps up the dunking for the rest of the year and I get to make a dunkilation for him. Damn, that would be so sweet. Not as sweet as a D.J. Stephens dunkilation (why the HECK isn’t he in the league DAMMIT), but still really god-damn sweet.
