Greg Monroe 24 Points/5 Assists Full Highlights (3/3/2017)

Usually Greg Monroe has trouble finishing at the rim. For some reason, he has no touch at all when he’s up close to the basket, so he usually just throws the ball hard of the backboard and hope it catches enough rim on the way down to stay in the hole. However, in this game, he actually finished his layups with confidence and accuracy. Part of it was due to the Clippers’ defense getting utterly bamboozled (or their failure to box out) and letting Monroe shoot wide-open bunnies that even he couldn’t miss, but part of it was Monroe actually shooting layups like a normal person and not rushing them up there.

I’m pretty sure Monroe could shoot 60% from the field if he could just make the easy layups that are so common for big men to effortlessly convert. And if he stopped doing that “face up at the elbow and stand there for three seconds before popping a jumper” thing. “Spacing” is a mirage peddled to us by the NBA talking heads, but if spacing did really exist, Monroe shooting those jumpers wouldn’t provide very much of it.
