Is it bad that I continue to utilize the “Rich Holmie Chaun” nickname for Richaun Holmes when I barely understand what it’s referencing? My knowledge of rap artists is minimal, and even that is an exaggeration. I didn’t know who Rich Homie Quan was until I looked up the reference because the 76ers Twitter used the nickname. I haven’t listened to any of Quan’s music. Do people even call him “Quan”? I don’t know. Maybe they just call him “Rich”. People who actually have knowledge of his music would have to inform me.
I feel like if I had more knowledge of that rapping music, I would be able to use lines from the songs in my descriptions and connect on a deeper level with my audience. Basketball fans and rap fans are two groups that have lots of overlap and I would immediately earn large amounts of “cred” (short for credits I think) by using such references in a seamless and entertaining way. I know everybody loves that new Blazers commentator who drops in rap references to the broadcast. It would be just like that except I’m way cooler than that guy.
Unfortunately, cultivation of such extensive knowledge of rap as a genre is too time-consuming a task for me to undertake. So you’ll just have to keep dealing with my poorly-thought-out ramblings for the foreseeable future.
