I’ve lost track of how much money is “a lot” in the NBA these days, what with the wildly inflating cap space that teams have to play with. But 26 million for Jrue Holiday seems like it would qualify. Not only is he getting that this year, but he’s getting that for the next four years after this.
Jrue is a nice player, sure. He was an All-Star once upon a time, and he can still put up some really nice numbers. But are they nice enough to justify paying him the GDP of a small Pacific island nation? Jrue-stans will flock all over this and tell me how great he is and stuff, but I don’t think so. It’s just so much moolah for a fringe core piece of the franchise.
Tim Frazier could do the same things for about a tenth of the money, and it’s not like Pelicans fans don’t already know that. Those two players might be the same age, but only one of them gets triple-doubles all the time and has supreme chemistry with Anthony Davis.
