If Donovan Mitchell really, REALLY wants to win the ROY award, he has to start having more assist-y nights like this one. He might win it anyway, because he’s such a highlightable player, but it’s easy to look at his super-duper high amount of shots attempted versus his assists as a short-ish shooting guard and say “wow that guy sure likes to chuck doesn’t he?”. I mean, that’s a true statement to make. He might like getting assists, but he likes shooting the rock a whole lot more. But it’s the kind of statement that makes him look worse than someone whose initials are BS.
To be fair, part of it is the system he plays in. Even Rubio can’t get assists anymore and he’s one of the best passers in the league. Also, the system he plays in is basically called the “Donovan Mitchell shoot the ball please” system.
