Wes Matthews AKA “The Best Wes” was never the same after his Achilles tendon turned into Achilles spaghetti, but at least the Mavericks were nice enough to give him a contract that would allow him to comfortably live out the rest of his days. Matthews will definitely be picking up the $18 million player option on that thing because the only person in Dallas who’s giving the Mavericks breaks on their contract is Dirk.
After next season in (presumably) Dallas, Matthews will enter the “veteran three-point shooter in limited minutes” role, either with the Mavs or with some other team who wants his extra-solid three-point shooting on their roster. He’ll be on a reasonable contract then, and he’ll have the accumulated goodwill of an undrafted player who went on to have a long, productive NBA career, so everybody will love him and then in a few more years he’ll retire and we’ll all miss him. In case you missed it, that’s my OFFICIAL CAREER PREDICTION FOR WES MATTHEWS.
