It will take a lot to get me off the Doug McDermott bandwagon. How could a Jimmer Fredette with actual NBA size not be a productive player? That is my reasoning, and maybe it’s super flawed, I don’t care, until he’s washed up and playing for peanuts in the Philippines I will maintain that he could’ve been a bigtime scorer.
It could still happen. He’s been playing really well for the Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki is getting old. See where I’m going with this? I thought Maxi Kleber was the Dirk replacement, but I was wrong, it turns out that Mark Cuban is grooming McDermott to replace Dirk as Dallas’ franchise cornerstone. Okay, that’s pushing it. But is it unreasonable to say that he’s going to score 17 a game next season? No. It’s not. Because the Mavs will still be tanking and tanking means minutes for no-defense scorers like Dougie McBuckets.
Basically all of McDermott’s points tonight were the result of him moving without the ball. However bad his team’s record is, Carlisle still runs a functional offense that can get players looks, something that wasn’t happening as much when he was in New York. 17 ppg as an opportunistic scorer would be tough, but I think he can do it. Just need to be a little less selective when it comes to shooting treys.
