Omari Spellman’s listed weight is 245 pounds. Watch this video, and tell me if you think the dude depicted within weighs 245 pounds. No way. Even the thumbnail image gives his true girth away. He’s gotta be pushing 300, and I’m only exaggerating a little bit. He’s what the teenagers call “T H I C C”.
Since the departure of Jared Sullinger, and with Zion Williamson still in college, there is a severe lack of legitimate big boys in the NBA. The league is moving in a direction where being able to get up and down the court is an important skill, and dudes carrying a couple extra T-Bones inside their jerseys are going to have a rough time of it. Zach Randolph isn’t even that big, but he’s almost unplayable now. But Spellman is young, still. He still has young legs, young ligaments, and a young respiratory system. He can make it work for now, but there’s no way that the coaching staff isn’t begging him to stop executing multiple 7-11 raids per night.
Kevin Huerter’s lob attempt to him was optimistic, but the rest of the game looked good for Spellman. Apparently he was a good three-point shooter in college? He doesn’t look the part, but he was 4 of 5 from the deep zone tonight, so I guess that’s just how he’s going to be. His other buckets were dunks, so maybe he does fit in the modern NBA after all.
