I’m not sure if I can get behind this “Sparty” nickname that the Spurs commentators have come up with for Bryn Forbes. I guess it’s a reference to the fact that he played for Michigan State, who are the “Spartans”, but that’s a bad nickname source for two reasons. One, there’s a bunch of players from Michigan State; what makes Forbes more deserving of “Sparty” than the rest of them? Two, why would you give an NBA player a college-based nickname? The NBA is way better than the college game, and even if you don’t think that (why are you on my channel, anyway?), players lose almost all of their college identity once they enter the league unless they went to Duke.
So, we’re in agreement now that the nickname sucks. I’ll defer the task of creating a new, better nickname to my future self so that my future self has material for another description.
Nicknames aside, it should be noted that Forbes was 2-of-7 from the field in this game before he picked it up in the fourth quarter and overtime, finishing 6-of-14. That is an impressive amount of resilience from a young player, but it should be expected; he knew that there was no way he would get a DTB highlight video unless he actually started making shots. This Forbes guy definitely has his head in the right place.
