We were such fools to think that a player who shoots 65% from the free throw line could ever be a good three-point shooter. Such fools! Such astounding foolishness! It is a well-known adage that “he who sucks from free will suck from three”. Jaylen Brown’s near-40% three-point shooting last season was simply a statistical fluke that carried through the whole season. Now he’s shooting 32% from that same distance this season, a percentage to be expected of somebody who has not demonstrated consistent jumpshooting mechanics.
Yes, Brown was 3-of-5 from the threezone in this game. That’s another example of the statistical flukes that I was talking about earlier. He needs to work on his consistency before he can be counted on to do that every game or even most games. That’s easy for me to say because I’m not the one who has to put in the work. All I have to do is sit around and make highlight videos.
But DTB does have experience with breaking down and re-creating a jumpshot, because I had to do it when I picked the ball back up after high school. Having never played seriously at any level, my jumpshot stopped developing when I was in middle school, which meant it was a two-handed push shot from my chin. With perserverence, tears, and a lot of bricked shots, I eventually started shooting it almost like a normal person (my guide hand still does funny things), and now I outshoot everybody at the park. My underwhelming success story is unlikely to provide any motivation to Brown’s effort to become a better shooter, but I had to throw my credentials out there so you all don’t think I’m full of bullpoo.
