In order to get Torrey Craig more of the attention that he deserves, I have started a new viral hashtag that will raise his profile and ultimately result in larger contracts for him as he continues his career in the NBA: #TorreyCraigIsWelsh
It doesn’t matter whether Torrey Craig is actually of Welsh ancestry or not. That’s totally irrelevant. What is relevant, however, is that his name definitely sounds like it could be Welsh. If you told me that there’s a peat farmer in Wales named Torrey Craig, I would believe you without a second thought. I’m not even joking right now. That name sounds Welsh as heck. Remember, #TorreyCraigIsWelsh
My feeling is that the people of Wales don’t really care about the NBA. This hashtag could change all that. When they found out that one of their own is playing in the NBA, they’ll flock to the sport like ducks on a junebug. They might be a little bit taken aback by the fact that Craig is a black man, but they’ll get over it. I’m sure there are black people in Wales who have Welsh-sounding names. The thing is, there’s not a ton (or tonne) of Welsh people who have broken through into American mainstream media, so they’d love to latch on to an American sports star like Craig.
The way I described it, it sounds like everybody benefits here except me. Craig benefits from the extra attention, Welsh people benefit from getting hyped about a Welsh man in the NBA, and the NBA benefits from all the extra Welsh fans who are coming to the sport. What do I get out of it? Well, when I start selling T-Shirts with the #TorreyCraigIsWelsh hashtag on them (complete with outline of Craig’s face superimposed on a map of Wales), I’ll be rolling in it. I just have to figure out how to convert between real American dollars and whatever crazy non-currency the Welsh use.
