I would like to characterize my faith in Tyler Herro as “unshakable”. But with every floater he takes (and sometimes makes) my rock-steady faith takes a small hit.
I’ve made my position on floaters very clear. Regardless, there may be some confusion on Herro’s part. I have said in the past that floaters are the sole domain of unathletic white players who can’t get any other shot. Herro only falls into one of those categories, the “white” category, but that doesn’t give him permission to shoot that kind of shot. He’s not the right kind of white player to be taking ugly one-handed running shots from inside the free-throw line. Matthew Dellavedova is an example of a player who is, begrudgingly, allowed to. But not Herro. Not even close.
I don’t care if there’s a nifty little ball fake before the floater. It’s still a floater, and until he changes those floaters into pull-up jumpers like Michael Beasley does, I’m going to have to recharacterize my faith in him as decidedly shakable.
It pains me to do that, and it pains me to be so hard on him, but I’m saying these things because I really enjoy watching him play and want only the best for his career. His career will be best served if he excises that part of his game forever. Replace them with threes, replace them with dunks, replace them with lobs to Derrick Jones Jr., I don’t care. Just get these floaters out of my face.
