Full unabridged title of this video: “Garrett Temple 21 Points/1 Game-Losing Turnover Full Highlights (8/19/2020)”.
“Game-Losing” might be a somewhat hyperbolic adjective, but it also isn’t. The Nets were down by three with seven seconds left when Temple coughed the ball up. Even if they had hit a three-pointer on that possession, the game would have simply been tied. There would have been a lot of work to do to secure the win after that. A “Game-losing” turnover would be a situation where a team up by one point turns it over with three seconds left, leading to an uncontested fastbreak layup that gives the other team the win with no time left on the clock. Temple did not do that.
However, Temple’s gaffe basically cost the Nets any small chance they had of victory. It’s not as directly devastating to the fans as the scenario described above, but it’s still moderately devastating, at least to the fans who are still clinging to the team through their shorthanded playoff run. How many fans is that, exactly? It could be as many as two hundred. There’s no way to know.
Temple was the Nets’ leading scorer in this one, so that absolves him of some of the shame/blame/fame of his turnover. If he hadn’t done so much scoring earlier in the game, the Nets wouldn’t have been as close as they were. So I’d better not see any Nets fans turning on him.
