When it comes to the Knicks and bad contracts, all anybody wants to talk about is Joakim Noah, his busted knees, and his gigantic albatross of a contract. But what flies under the radar his Lance Thomas and the Knicks-given contract that sees him getting paid seven million dollars per year for the next four years.
It’s not terrible in terms of raw ability to destroy your cap, but it is pretty bad from a value perspective. Lance Thomas peaked last season by averaging eight points per game. Nobody in the world thought that he would improve on that number. But the Knicks gave him a contract that seemed to say, “Hey kid, why don’t you go out there and average TWELVE a game now?” In defiance of the amount of money he’s getting paid, Lance is averaging six per game this year, to go with negligible rebounds and almost no assists at all. I bet those numbers won’t be much better when he’s 32 years old.
All that said, I love it when scrubs score way more points than expected, and Lance has done that two of the last three games (after scoring an even zero in the in-between game). Being an overpaid scrub doesn’t mean that DTB doesn’t love you!
