If you don’t consider D’Angelo Russell a point guard (I don’t know if I do or not…more research is required), then Tyler “The Creator” Ennis is the only true point guard on the Lakers’ roster. Jose Calderon is long gone, and now plays in Atlanta. Marcelo Huertas is also long gone, having been the one traded to acquire Ennis in the first place. Those moves were consistent with the Lakers’ vision, which is to give as many minutes as possible to young players in an effort to foricbly develop them. Huertas and Calderon were done developing; in fact, they were un-developing right before our eyes. Meanwhile, Tyler the Creator is ripe for development like a prime, untouched hectare of Amazonian rainforest.
As the Lakers’ epic tanking saga draws to its end, I imagine that the tank will be made even tankier by giving Ennis more minutes. He has yet to do much of note in the NBA after being drafted 18th in 2014 (sandwiched between James Young [oops] and Gary Harris [oops]), but ten good games to close out the season would do a long way to making GM’s across the league think he’s worth another look. I hope it works out for him because I don’t want to give up my cool nickname for him so soon after I came up with it.
