For the most part I agree with the decisions that the various coaching staffs around the league make. They’re the professionals. They know what’s best. I’m just a lazy internet commentator who sits around and scratches its nutsack all day.
But I must take issue with the Grizzlies’ minute allotment. Namely the (lack of) playing time for Jon Leuer. What’s the deal here? He was playing pretty good in December and into January, including some 23 point games. Then his minutes got cut as Gasol returned, and then he was put in the dreaded DNP zone. For three whole weeks. Three whole weeks with not even a single minute played. It baffles me. Leuer is definitely good enough for at least garbage time minutes, and probably should be getting reasonable backup big minutes.
So Zach Randolph is out because he ate a dozen dozen (fancy people call that a “gross”, which is fitting) Krispy Kreme donuts in one sitting and has a bad tummy ache. Jonny Badger finally gets to take that warmup off. What does he do? Scores 19 in 26 minutes, including 3 three pointers.
We can expect to see Leuer continue rotting on the bench for the rest of the season, despite this game. It’s obvious that on-court production plays no role in determining minutes for the cockamamie Grizzlies organization.
