It is not well-known in basketball circles that Jonas Jerebko, before becoming a world-famous basketball player, was a prominent local musician in his hometown of Kinna, Sweden. Playing guitar for the band Gorbath, he joined up with local powerhouse drummer Fredrik Bergqvist to create a pummeling assault that reached back to the country’s old-school roots while maintaing relevance in the day’s music scene.
After much scouring of record stores in his native land of Sweden, I finally got hold of their one and only release, a 2002 cassette demo entitled “Morbid Sickness”. Since there’s no information about this release on the internet, I’m putting the tracklist here:
1. Morbid Sickness (4:32)
2. Awaken in Crypt (3:18)
3. Dreams of Darkness (5:07)
4. Trapped in the Horizon (2:51)
I don’t want to write a big review here since this isn’t the place for it, but I found myself enjoying this demo despite its major production flaws. Bergqvist really steals the show, but Jonas proves himself to be a competent guitarist, even treating us with a shredding solo halfway through Awaken in Crypt. Definitely recommended listening for fans of old school Swedeath, that is, if you can even locate a copy. I’m not sharing mine.
