Rudy “Gogurt” Gobert: best center in the NBA right now? Eye test says no because he doesn’t score enough points! Advanced stats say yes because advanced stats don’t care about how many points you score! Casual fans wouldn’t be able to tell you which team he plays for but hardcore fans get a half-boner whenever somebody says his name. Who’s right?
For your information, here’s the top-ranked centers by winshares, which is the best stat ever:
1. Rudy Gobert
2. Nerlens Noel (small sample size, doesn’t count)
3. Lucas Nogueira (doesn’t count either)
4. DeAndre Jordan (this one counts)
5. Enes Kanter
6. Marreese Speights (I wish this one didn’t count)
7. Jeff Withey (see nos. 2, 3)
8. Dewayne Dedmon (fine. fine.)
9. Dwight Howard (aren’t we supposed to hate him?)
10. DeMarcus Cousins
Anthony Davis is in there somewhere but he’s a power forward. Thon Maker’s also way up there but basketball-reference thinks he’s a power forward too (?), but that doesn’t matter because Maker doesn’t count.
Taking into account the stats enumerated above, and acknowledging that Gogurt has been scoring more points recently (12 points on nearly 70% shooting is very sick indeed), it’s not even a stretch to call him the best Center in the league right now. Woah.
