Marvin Williams is an interesting case study in what exactly constitutes a “bust”. If you’re not aware, and you really should be, he was the 2nd overall pick in 2005. He basically has averaged 10/5/1 for his career and has generally been a net positive on the court that whole time. A fine player, but never one that was more than the third best player on a team. At best. So is he a bust or nah?
The answer, disappointingly, rests entirely on your definition of bust. It varies wildly from fan to fan. Some people have distorted the term so much that someone like Kwame Brown, in their eyes, is not a bust at all, not even a little bit. On the other side of the spectrum, there are people that think if you don’t average 20 per game and were picked top-5 that you are a busteroni and cheese pizza for sure. Jeff Green? Ultra bust.
I think the best term for Williams is “disappointment”. He’s been fine, but is fine really what you want from the 2nd overall pick? No. You want a star, or at least someone who can maybe scrape into the All-Star game during a down year. That’s not Williams, and it will never be Williams.
Andrew Bogut though is a total huge bust and if he could go hang out with his bust friends in bustville and never show his face ever again that would be perfect.
