I get uneasy when Marvin Bagley does those running hook shots off of post-ups. Those are the kinds of shots that marginal big men take because they’re too weak to take their defender to BBQ town. Very few “good” players take that shot with any regularity. I’m guessing that Bagley takes those shots because he knows he’s supposed to be a scorer but doesn’t quite have the arsenal of scoring moves that would actually let him be a scorer, so he just does the things he’s capable of, which include hook shots running across the lane. It honestly reminds me a bit of Jusuf Nurkic, who will throw up hook shots whenever he wants just because that’s what a big guy is supposed to do when he’s sort of near the basket.
However, I can’t complain too much about Bagley’s scoring moves because he’s shooting above 50% on the season. In case you forgot my rule of thumb, 50% is the official demarcation line between “yeah, he’s an okay scorer” and “give this guy as many touches as he wants because it will usually work out”. When a rookie shoots well from the field on relatively high volume, that’s a good sign that they’re going to turn out to be a pretty good player.
What I am absolutely NOT COOL with is how Bagley’s playability means that Skal Labissiere barely gets into games anymore. That is WAY NOT COOL. But I guess it’s okay because his trade value is super low, which means that Thon Maker for Skal Labissiere could totally happen.
