This is why we don’t hand out the end-of-season awards based on one good month near the end of the season. Nikola Mirotic killed it in March, scoring tons of points and inviting people to say things like “He contributes to a winning team, what has Andrew Wiggins done? Nikola should be Rookie of the Year”.
Wiggins isn’t a lot of things, but he has been somewhat consistent. Mirotic, on the other hand, crashed back down to Earth as soon as the calendar flipped to April, shooting a putrid 16-for-53 until tonight. Tom Thibodeau gets a lot of blame any time anything goes wrong for the Bulls, and I think I’ll blame him again this time. How is Nikola supposed to be consistent with his production when his minutes are determined by a random number generator?
So Mirotic isn’t going to be ROY. And that’s okay. Let Wiggins have his “most shots chucked” award. He can look at it while he watches Nikola in the playoffs.
