I was so sad when I saw that Robert Covington was traded from the 76ers. He was, like, the ORIGINAL process. He was the first of all the random scrubs that Hinkie cycled through his team to turn into something good. He wasn’t the most key member of their final iteration, but he had seen it all. He was 1 of the 25 76ers of the 2014-15 season where they won 18 games (and the only of them still on that team as of this year), then stuck around to lead them to 10 wins the next season (this time with T.J. McConnell by his side). He WAS the Philadelphia 76ers, the spirit of the team in physical form.
The process passed him by. That vast collection of scrubs/role-players/D-Leaguers/G-Leaguers was turned into Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid, and eventually, Jimmy Butler. That’s great. I’m so excited for that team. But I hope they remember Covington while they’re getting swept out of the ECF by the Bucks.
So now he’s on a new team. The Timberwolves, a chance for a new beginning even though he didn’t need a new beginning in the first place because he was doing just fine. Things have been pretty good for him over there! His team is winning, while his old team seems to be treading water.
But this wouldn’t be an honest description if I didn’t mention that he just went 1-of-18 last game, including 0-of-10 from three. That sucked. His team won that one by 15 anyway, but this is definitely a bounce-back game for him.
