Mario Hezonja 17 Points/3 Dunks Full Highlights (11/28/2018)

I had hopes that a change of scenery would further elevate Mario Hezonja out of “almost bust” status and into “decent role-player” territory. It’s easy to forget now, but he was actually sort of good at times for the Magic last year. Almost kinda consistently, too. I was making fun of the Magic for not picking up the fourth year option on his rookie contract just as he was looking to break out, and I thought he would continue his out-breaking in a new locale.

The Knicks are about as good of a landing spot as he could’ve hoped for, but things haven’t worked out. He’s been bad. A few decent-ish games, but mostly a whole lot of bricked threes and wavering confidence. I don’t need to point to any one stat, regular or advanced, to illustrate his badness; he’s been sub-par across the board.

His current contract is only a one-year affair. Does he get another one? He’s still got all the tools to be a good player, and probably currently has both the tools and skills to be a good/great player in Europe. I can see him getting a small deal with some team who thinks that can work their “magic” (hint: teams NEVER have any sort of magic for turning busts into non-busts) on him. Or, I can see him getting a nice payday to go back to Europe, which might be better for him. He can dominate, get some checks, and maybe work his way back to an Ekpe Udoh-like return at some point.
