A Jarrett Allen dunkilation is definitely happening this season. For sure. He’s on pace for somewhere around 175 dunks, assuming he doesn’t suffer a devastating afro injury that takes him out for multiple months. I’m just concerned that the quality of the dunkilation will suffer due to the lack of posters that Allen is generating.
At the beginning of last season, it seemed like Allen would posterize somebody every other game. He was catching bodies left and right. Defenders would regularly get a taste of his nut sweat or a whiff of his ball funk. Then he started backing off, maybe because he was getting more opportunities and didn’t need to force in dunks where they shouldn’t be forced, but the quality of the dunkilation definitely dragged as it went along. You could honestly have watched the first two minutes of that thing and seen everything it had to offer.
Now that trend of lackluster dunks is continuing. Maybe I’m not paying enough attention; maybe Allen is destroying people when I’m not looking. But I’m think that the strength of this year’s Jarrett Allen dunkilation will be its quantity, not necessarily quality. He’s kind of like Rudy Gobert, in that he dunks a million times and often in an aesthetic way, but rarely just dunks through people. That’s fine. It’s good in its own way. But I want some posters too.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go watch that video of Allen killing Lauri Markkanen in cold blood while everybody watches but nobody calls the police.
