A few weeks ago I officially undertook the ritual that transferred the “Deej” nickname from D.J. Wilson, who, at the time, was completely undeserving of the nickname, to its new recipient, D.J. “Deej” Augustin, who wasn’t playing spectacularly at the time but was playing significantly better than Wilson was.
Now I’m having second thoughts about the whole ritual because Wilson has been playing meaningful minutes for the Bucks and looking pretty decent while doing it, while Augustin has been the same uninspiring fringe starter that he’s always been. Sure, Augustin played well in this game, but his hefty point total was mostly due to the fact that he was way more aggressive shooting the ball than he has been all season (18 FGA is a season-high by a fair amount for him). He also benefited from undisciplined Suns defenders who couldn’t stop fouling him.
I would be more inclined to allow Deej to keep his nickname if his heroic free throws to send the game to overtime had actually resulted in a win. Sadly, the Magic hit one shot thirty seconds into OT and didn’t score any more points, so they lost and rendered Deej’s clutch free throws a wasted effort.
For now, Deej can keep his nickname, but if Wilson keeps doing Wilsony things, he’s gonna want the nickname back and I’ll have to get my dungeon ready for another ritual.
