I’m not here to argue the merits of taking Bismack Biyombo with the 7th overall pick. It is what it is. Why not go for the next Mutombo?
He’s been as good as advertised on the defensive end, and as poor as advertised on offense. He’s like the opposite of Al Jefferson, as opposite as it’s possible to be considering they’re both huge dark-skinned behemoths who play basketball for the Charlotte hornets. Biz’s post moves, when he dares to show them, are over-rehearsed and generally unsuccessful, compared to Big Al’s polished repertoir.
If he was on a team like the Cavaliers, who badly need someone who plays defense but also doesn’t want the ball ever, people would be singing quite a different tune on this guy. The Hornets are in the position where they can’t afford a total zero on offense from one of their players, so Bismack doesn’t get minutes, and thus looks like a huge bust.
Maybe he is a huge bust. Four years is a long time to not show measurable improvement on offense, other than knowing to not take shots anymore.
