I’m really digging Monte Morris’ game, but I’m not really digging his name. That’s because it combines the first name of “Monte”, which is way too close to Monta Ellis, and the last name of “Morris”, which only serves to remind me of my dislike of the Morris twins (and also my sadness that Darius Morris isn’t in the league anymore).
That’s why I think Morris should go by “Tay”. His name would no longer be alliterative, but it would at least distance him in my mind from Monta Ellis, whose stint with the Bucks has left permanent scars on my psyche. Plus, “Tay” is easier to say because it’s only one syllable. If Morris doesn’t like that option, he might have a middle name that he could use as his first name instead. Wikipedia says his middle name is Robert, so that could definitely work. Robert Morris. Sounds like a guy who would fix copy machines for a living, but it works.
The last name is harder to deal with since you actually have to get that legally changed. People don’t have nicknames for their last names like they do for their first names. Still, if somebody like Ron Artest/Metta World Peace/The Panda Friend can figure out how to navigate the bureaucracy surrounding name changes, Morris should have no problem filing the paperwork to change his last name to something like Zonday. Then he could be Tay Zonday. Some stay dry and others feel the pain.
